Alexander

Who was Alexander?

F.M. Alexander was born in 1869 in Tasmania. He became an actor but developed vocal problems. Doctors could only prescribe rest but as soon as he returned to the stage for another performance the problem reoccurred.  Alexander realised that it must be something he was doing himself that was causing the problem.  The doctor agreed but could not say what it was.  So he resolved to find out for himself.

Through self-observation he realised that the pressure on his vocal chords resulted from his habitual, learned style of stance and movement on stage.  His experiences revealed the stubborn nature of habit and necessity of working with the whole ‘psycho-physical self.

He did eventually cure himself of his vocal problems and his general health also improved. But many years of work and research were to follow.

Alexander came to London in 1904, where his work was greeted enthusiastically by doctors, actors and many influential people of his time.  He continued to teach and train new teachers until his death in 1955.  The work has stood the test of time and is taught throughout the world today.
